There is no more debated or misunderstood draft decision than what should I do, draft the highest rated player or go for the position that appears to be the best choice. Well the answer is in general go with the position.

Why you ask? Well the answer is that in choosing the best player over the position you maybe shorting your own fuse. In other words, you get a good player, but the next one will not be as good in the position you could have picked. The picking of the position gives you a combo of two that gives you more points. Math is as follows: Player— 3.5 plus 2.8=6.3. Position—3.2 plus 3.2=6.4. A little better, but the little means a lot over the season.

The beginning of August marks the beginning of the Fantasy football season as leagues start drafting for real and interest grows with each training camp revelation. Player selection, drafting aids and tools, including cheat sheets, player rankings , projections and salary cap become the talk of the fantasy world.

This year promises to be a terriffic fantasy football season with many key players changing teams and many of the established stars fading away. L. T. and Westbrook just to name two of the stars in apparent desendency. However, one of the fading fantasy stars may just have one more great year in him. The question is who?

Drafting leagues are the most popular leagues now, with CBS, ESPN and the NFL being the biggest. Several other free leagues are available. along with numerous premium leagues. Big bucks can be won for a small investment. On top of the commercial leagues, there are innumerable private leagues of all ilks.

My favorite drafting tool is The Live Cheat Sheat from Fantasy Sports Optimizer. You see its banner and ads everywhere now and it is truly unique, due to its interactive way of predictive drafting while being live as your draft takes place. What an advantage!!!!

Salary cap leagues such as H2H and the great Fanball leagues offer a game for the fantasy player who wants to win over many oppnents and not just one a week. Nothing wrong with one on one, but if you are new try one of the salary cap games. They are a lot of fun and require a combination of good player selection to start with and then constant monitoring and updating throughout the football season. Many tools are available to help you including the Optimizer from FSO and a weekly tool called Data Sense. These type of leagues are some of the earliest fantasy fooball games that were available and are still really challenging for the entire season. I remember a few years ago the first prize was won by a player who had one more rushing yard than the second place player. That was one yard out of 10,000. Can’t cut it any closer than that.

There are many of the snap type leagues available also. These are fun in that every week you can have a totally new team. Some have salary caps and some don’t. I play a few of these every week and it is amazing how many times the Monday night game decides your fate. Data Sense this year is my guiding tool and I am looking forward to a great year. Last year I did well, this year I am going to do super.

While there have been many changes some things seem to be a yearly event. The Farve Watch is on, Haynsworth is the most overpaid human being alive and every team thinks that if it all goes right, they have a chance. August is a great time for fans, fantasy and real because their team is the BEST.

Speaking of the best, who can deny that the Saints are being overlooked again this year. They are the Champs and all you hear about are the Pats, Jets, Vikings, Colts and Ravens. I say the Saints are equal to any of those teams and better by far than the Pats and the Jets. Here’s a salute to the world Champion New Orleans Saints and to the rest of the league, it up to you to dethrone the boys from the Bayou.

One team not talked about is my Chicago Bears. How they can be overlooked is without a doubt a serious slight from the gurus of football. Sid Luckman, Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Red Grange and Walter Peyton are just some fo the all-time greats in football and all were Bears. So why can’t Peppers, Cutler and Forte join them this year? No reason I can think of……Go Bears!!!

What are some fantasy Football drafting tools? Well, there are numerous rankings of players available on several different sites. Remember, however, that if the site has a fantasy football game, the rankings may be made with this in mind. Check out the difference between ESPN’s player rankings and CBS’s player selection tool and rankings. The difference is huge and the reason is that their respective leagues are very different in how many of each positions are played at one time. We have noted this in previous blogs and are not being redundant, I hope, by pointing out what a player ranking system means to you. If you play in their leagues, the rankings are worthwhile, but DO NOT switch them.

That then brings up what do you do in your league? Well you can see how similar your private or public league is to one of the public leagues that offers free drafting tools. One thing this does is take out some of the bias in other’s drafting tools and helps move you closer to your league. Does it help. sure, but make sure that you understand the difference in scoring and number of players at the various positions.

What else can you do? Well, one good player I know, does relative rankings based on last year’s results and how he thinks it is going to be this year. For example, he views Joe Flacco more favorably this year than last due to the improvement in his receiving corps. Now does he add 10% or 24% or 37% to Joe’s score from last year? He isn’t telling me, but it may make Baltimore Joe an earlier pick than normally. You can do the same, just don’t get carried away. Baltimore Joe is not going to pass for 5400 yards and score 439 points, new help or not.

Something else some fantasy’s gurus do is pick players in later rounds that are going to have their BREAKOUT years. Year three is the magic year for receivers or so they say. Sometimes adding a Farve is even better. So look around and see who is in a much better position this year than last and draft accordingly.

Does your league have mock drafts? Probably not, but it might be fun. Think of the goofing off you can do and the beer you can drink. Party mock drafts should be started everywhere just for the fun of it.

Why I do not normally endorse fantasy football games I recommend that you check this one out. Fantasy Football Open Championship has been around awhile, so many of you are familar with it, but it is well worth the visit. FFOC offers a $1,000,000 top prize. $300,000 in cash and rest over the next 14 years. However, it is one of the most fun leagues to play in not only because of the prize, but also because each week means so much.

Fantasy Sports Optimizer offers two great fantasy tools to help in this league. What everyone loves about fantasy football is the fun of it. It starts with the prep work for selecting your team and builds from thereon. I remember back 15 years ago when I had my first roto team in the CDM league now known as Fanball, and it was done on the phone and through the mail….no internet.

My first team featured Jerry Rice, Barry Sanders and Troy Aikman. In the first week, Rice and Aikman got hurt and Barry had the worst game of his career. I was last in a league of 25 and I could not believe the standings when I received them in the mail. I waited all week to see my results, knowing that they would be poor, but last was well… overwhelming. It was not a great start to a fantasy career, but my pride refused to accept defeat. I finished 13th that year in my league and in the middle of the overall league. Where was FSO when you needed them?

The fantasy football season is almost upon us and player selection, drafting tools and positional analysis aids are getting ready to go. Mock drafts are important for the novice, and fun for all. Plan on taking part as soon as you are ready.

This season promises to be a great one, with numerous players moving to new teams, double headed running back combos all over the league, hot QBs and crazy receivers. This year we have many stars that have some baggage from 2009 or know of upcoming problems.

Let’s review a few. What do you do about Big Ben? Of course, it would help to know how long he is going to be out, but assume four weeks. Do you draft him as if he were playing 16 games and hope that your backup QB can carry the load? Probably not, but he might only fall a round or two depending on the makeup of your league. Looking at player selection rankings, it seems that so far he has not been hurt too much. There is another thought that says stay away, you are only one incident from a year off.

Speaking of QBs what about Henne and Flacco? Are they really that much better plays due to getting a good receiver added to their roster. I say see the preliminary player selecton chart and then try to pick one of these as your backup, if they are still availble in later rounds. FSO’s player rankings will be very useful here.

Mr. Kolb of the Eagles is another potential delight or disaster. Will he be a 300 yards passer as he was for his few starts last year or turn Michael Vick into a starter? Once you figure that one out, you know what to do with both QBs. In auction drafts this could be a real steal or a waste of valuable dollars. Eagle fans will have a quandry deciding on who is who.

Now to Arizona, Does Matt the USC great finally make it big or do they dream of Warner all year long? One thing for sure, the receivers are thinner in Phoenix this year and that could really hurt Leinart. Troubles are a brewing in the land of the sun, I believe.

What do you do about Donavan McNabb? New city, new coach and a lot of over paid under achieving players in DC. My guess is that DM is in for a long season until Mike starts to work his magic,,,,which usually means a balanced attack. I’ve always liked NcNabb, but not a starter this year.

Finally, there is the Oakland situation. Russell is gone and Jason Campbell is in….the question is in what? Some people are picking the Raiders as the surprise team of 2010. Last year, they did win a few good games, so I guess it is possible. I doubt it, but then I am a Bear booster, so what can you say.

You always hear about this position is deep. What does it mean? I am not sure, but one way is to look at the points scored by the position leader and use a percentage to determine depth at that position.

So I am going to do that and arbitrarily chose 75%. Remember, each league scoring is different, so it is important to see what the scoring system is and how many players at that position are going to be drafted.

Using ESPN for example, this is what I found based on last year’s actual score and using that number times 75% to see how deep is deep.

Let’s start with QBs. A. Rodgers was the leader with 327 points and the threshold therefore was 245. Including Rodgers, there were 9 QBs who were within range. Pretty good depth. Running back had C.Johnson as its leader at 329, the leagues overall high. and only three RBs had 246 points or more. Pretty sparse, I would say. WR’s leader was A. Johnson @ 205 points and there were 12 receivers that had 153 or more. The deepest of all positions.

V. Davis led TEs with 168 points. Only four TEs made the required 126 or more. The second sparest of all positions. D/ST leader was the 49′ers at 167. 10 teams had the required 125 or more. Deep compared to TEs and RBs. Finally, Kaeding of the Chargers led the kickers with 155 points. 11 kickers had the necessary 116 points or more, the second deepest position.

What does this all mean? Well, it is based on last year and can Chris Johnson repeat his great year? Who knows, (not counting the Shadow) but one thing is for sure the running backs had a tough year in 2009. Some injuries, some poor performance and some because the rules now favor the quarterback.

How do you use this information in preparing for this years drafts? Use Live Cheat Sheet from Fantasy Sports Optimizer for sure. Handling multiple conflicting possiblitilies is their speciality. Also do mock drafts for practice and see what others are doing with the new reality of king QB.

2010’s fantasy football season is rapidly approaching, just a few months away. Player selection, drafting tools and aids and good old intuition are getting closer to being back in vogue. I look forward to this season and know that my rejuvinated Bears are going to kick the Vikes and Packs butt!!!!!

As the fanstasy football season approaches, the question surrounding mock drafts becomes asked with many answers. The purpose of mock drafts depends on at what level of fantasy football are you playing at.

If you are a neophyte, then mock drafts serve a purpose that old pros take for granted. Namely, learning how to handle the software and time constraints. This is not a minor point if you plan on having player selection tools sitting next to you and moving smoothly throught the draft. All is well for the first two rounds, but then the action speeds up and chaos reigns. I highly recommend mock drafts in the leagues you are going to play in, if at all possible. Many timing mistakes can be avoided or at least minimzed.

The best player selection and rankings are meaningless if you can’t keep up. Try looking at what is messing you up and then plan to overcome them in the best manner possible. I recommend Live Cheat Sheet and Data Sense from Fantasy Sports Optimizer. FSO takes much of the mystery and stress out of the “for real” draft. You only get one chance in most leagues, so make the most of it.

Now for the real pros, what does mock drafting do for them. Some say they look for the hidden values that are falling to the later rounds. Maybe, but maybe not.
I think most pros do it for the fun……and that is what fantasy football is all about.

Today, we complete our interviews with the rest of my league from last year. Three more great ones finish the set. They are Jefferson Davis, Mata Hari and P.T. Barnum.

Jefferson Davis believed in great field generals, but didn’t care much for lowly others and went for too many QBs. This was inspite of asking Fantasy Sports Optimizer for player selection and position selection using Data Sense to learn about player rankings and to try different senarios in mock drafts. On top of that on draft day, he ignored Live Cheat Sheet advise and picked a team of losers named the Lowly Rebels. What can you say. Jeff just never could get it in his head that the whole team won or lost and not just the leaders. He finished nearly last, only slightly ahead of Julius Caesar. Better luck next season Jeff!!!!

Mata Hari is a sexy gal who loves spying. There is a rumor that she has an annual contract with the Patriots to “review” opponents game plans. Mata say it isn’t so!!

MS. Hari used every fantasy tool available to her to help her team named, The Sneaky Devils, to finish in the top half of the league. She said that FSO’s Data Sense really helped her and she looks forward to the upcoming draft season and using FSO’s analytical tools and getting her team to the top of the heap. She also said that this year all the gloves and other articles of clothes will be off and her skill will be used to the fullest. Go Mata!!!!

P. T. Barnum of “there is a sucker born every minute” fame played his first season of fantasy football last season. He did only one mock draft and didn’t know of FSO’s fantasy tools. In spite of using many circus techniques and naming his team The Clowns, he almost missed the safety net and finshed waaaaay down with Jeff and Julie. P.T. said that this year its going to be full use of FSO’s fantasy aids and practicing with mock drafts. He said that analytical tools and optimizing techniques will be at the top of his tent. What a guy, already changing the show to make sure his team will be the greatest show on earth.

So, there are the interviews with nine of the all time greats and their experience last year in the world of fantasy football. Tools, brains and luck all contribute to the winners, but one thing was for sure. No FSO and no glory.

This is the second installment containing interviews with other players in the fantasy football league that I was pleased to be a member of last fall. Last week, we had interviews with Julius Ceasar, Harry Markowitz and Walt Disney.

This week, we start with Attila The Hun, his nickname was Hunny, and he finished in the lower half of our league. His team name was The Hunny Pots. He led the league in ground yards (he loves hand to hand combat), but was last in passing. Attila, said that he thought the spearchuckers were cowards for throwing the ball and then getting out of the way. “Cowards everyone of them”, stated Hunny. His description of the receivers was less than complimentary and lacked the political correctness that Barney Frank loves, among other things.

This year though, Hunny said that he is going to signup for Fantasy Sports Optimizer’s tools including Data Sense and Live Cheat Sheets. Hunny realizes that in modern warfare called fantasy football, you need all the aids you can get and FSO has the best. Hunny is going to participate in mock drafts to help sharpen his skills at selection. When Hunny was at his peak, he would take what he wanted, but in the modern world of fantasy football you must play by some rules. Tough break for Attila, because otherwise he would be the odds on favorite. Good luck this year Hunny.

The next member I interviewed was Sir Isaac Newton, famous mathematician, scientist and cookie maker. He was especially interested in optics and higher math. This led to the famous question, “what do you see in the numbers?” Sir Isaac named his team The Figs….we believe after his cookies ( The fig newtons dummy) and not as an abbreviation of the synonym of numbers, namely figures.

Isaac knew of Harry’s work and he purchased Data Sense early in the season. He took part in many mock drafts and learned player and position selection. He enthusiasticly, endosed the use of FSO’s Cheat Sheets and finished high in the standings. This year The Figs will be hard to beat as Sir I will use all the analytical tools and aids he can, participate in numerous mock drafts and will be a Fantasy Sports Optimizer booster and purchaser. Only gravity will hold him down, but he is an early favorite along with Harry the genius.

The last player interviewed this week was my personal favorite….Lady Godiva. This gal knew nothing about fantasy football, but the members of league were more than willing to give her a helping hand or any other body part that she desired. They told her about mock drafts, position selection, player selection and the use of many of fantasy football tools and analytical tools.

Her husband Lord Godiva, was the first world famous Chocolatier, consequently, she called her team the Chocolate Riders. Unfortunately, he got kick in the head by her horse and she became a widow. We all went to the funeral and gave the horse a big bag of oats each.

The best week of the season was when Lady G cut her hair…..WOW!!!! what a player to have in your league. Big Ben heard about her and came on the prowl, but Attila explained what he would look like with an ax in his head. Now that is being a good league player and friend, along with being a Hun.

This year Lady G is planning on attending mock drafts, getting player rankings and all the FSO tools possible. She told me that she expects to finish high in the saddle or was it the league?
