What determines depth at a position?

May 27th, 2010

You always hear about this position is deep. What does it mean? I am not sure, but one way is to look at the points scored by the position leader and use a percentage to determine depth at that position.

So I am going to do that and arbitrarily chose 75%. Remember, each league scoring is different, so it is important to see what the scoring system is and how many players at that position are going to be drafted.

Using ESPN for example, this is what I found based on last year’s actual score and using that number times 75% to see how deep is deep.

Let’s start with QBs. A. Rodgers was the leader with 327 points and the threshold therefore was 245. Including Rodgers, there were 9 QBs who were within range. Pretty good depth. Running back had C.Johnson as its leader at 329, the leagues overall high. and only three RBs had 246 points or more. Pretty sparse, I would say. WR’s leader was A. Johnson @ 205 points and there were 12 receivers that had 153 or more. The deepest of all positions.

V. Davis led TEs with 168 points. Only four TEs made the required 126 or more. The second sparest of all positions. D/ST leader was the 49′ers at 167. 10 teams had the required 125 or more. Deep compared to TEs and RBs. Finally, Kaeding of the Chargers led the kickers with 155 points. 11 kickers had the necessary 116 points or more, the second deepest position.

What does this all mean? Well, it is based on last year and can Chris Johnson repeat his great year? Who knows, (not counting the Shadow) but one thing is for sure the running backs had a tough year in 2009. Some injuries, some poor performance and some because the rules now favor the quarterback.

How do you use this information in preparing for this years drafts? Use Live Cheat Sheet from Fantasy Sports Optimizer for sure. Handling multiple conflicting possiblitilies is their speciality. Also do mock drafts for practice and see what others are doing with the new reality of king QB.

2010’s fantasy football season is rapidly approaching, just a few months away. Player selection, drafting tools and aids and good old intuition are getting closer to being back in vogue. I look forward to this season and know that my rejuvinated Bears are going to kick the Vikes and Packs butt!!!!!

Experts and mock drafts—don’t points and risk count?

May 21st, 2010

This year one of the three big gamers published their Experts mock draft and player rankings. I found it interesting due to the fact that neither points nor risk seemed to be considered.

For example, in their first 2 rounds (20 picks) only two QBs were taken, ONLY TWO. Now I ask you, did you see what I saw last fall? The NFL has not changed their rules this year, so last years rules still apply. What is the essence of those rules? Protect the QB and score more through the air by restricting the defensive backs.

Based on points alone this is an interesting phenomenon…..I am being kind, but what else can you say? I just cannot see it, maybe I am blind to some superior logic, but they don’t call me Braincase for nothing. They call me other things for no good reason, I know that for a fact!!!

Even more important to me is RISK!!!! How can you rate Gore, Turner, Marshall, Benson etc. ahead of Peyton. How many 16 game seasons have they played in the last few years? I will tell you NONE!

None, now how can you pick a none in front of Peyton? Unless you are very devout and can’t spell, you would never pick a none in front of Peyton. Lower points and less games played add up to a failed early pick and most likely a failed fantasy season.

Now help is available from many sources, but the one that best handles risk is FSO’s fantasy tools and services. Fantasy Sports Optimizer uses advanced techniques that handle risk more successfully than anything else on the market. Take a look at their offerings this summer, compare to other products and decide. I bet you will be an FSO fan this year.

Only 6 weeks to go until the first fantasy drafts of the season start. Wow! The off season is almost over. Be blogging with you in a few weeks.

Mock drafts—do they mean anything?

May 13th, 2010

As the fanstasy football season approaches, the question surrounding mock drafts becomes asked with many answers. The purpose of mock drafts depends on at what level of fantasy football are you playing at.

If you are a neophyte, then mock drafts serve a purpose that old pros take for granted. Namely, learning how to handle the software and time constraints. This is not a minor point if you plan on having player selection tools sitting next to you and moving smoothly throught the draft. All is well for the first two rounds, but then the action speeds up and chaos reigns. I highly recommend mock drafts in the leagues you are going to play in, if at all possible. Many timing mistakes can be avoided or at least minimzed.

The best player selection and rankings are meaningless if you can’t keep up. Try looking at what is messing you up and then plan to overcome them in the best manner possible. I recommend Live Cheat Sheet and Data Sense from Fantasy Sports Optimizer. FSO takes much of the mystery and stress out of the “for real” draft. You only get one chance in most leagues, so make the most of it.

Now for the real pros, what does mock drafting do for them. Some say they look for the hidden values that are falling to the later rounds. Maybe, but maybe not.
I think most pros do it for the fun……and that is what fantasy football is all about.

So this year, try some mock drafts and have some fun!!!! Go Bears!!!!

What’s happening now?

May 5th, 2010

We enter the preseason with a few questions answered or at least that is what the teams say and mostly unanswered questions. Of course, since it is early May, we should have unanswered questions.

Let’s start with the answered questions….Best is starting for the Lions. So much for Mr Smith goes to Detroit. Best was a very good back in college last year, but no one thought that he was the best college back. Questions, “how can Best not be the best?” Answer, he was drafted by the Lions.

What else do we know for sure. Well, Pete Carroll of the ever hopeful Seahawks loves his former players from USC. The discussion in the Northwest centers around LenDale White losing 20 pounds and becoming the next Chris Johnson. Well, if losing 20 pounds turns White into a back as good as his former teammate, then the Hawks will be mighty fortunate. Most likely, however, White will be an OK back who is a little bit faster, not quicker, and slightly less of a power threat. Let’s hope I am wrong, for Pete’s sake……pun intended.

Next, according to the Pittsburg press, Bryon Leftwich, is ahead of Dennis Dixon for the starting QB spot while Big Ben pays for his sins….probably in a night club in some college town. Leftwich has more experience, but Dixon has an excitment quality about him that could really have the Steeler fans cheering. I would also play Dixon because he has more upside right now than Leftwich and with Big Ben always on the edge of trouble, Dixon could get many more reps than is now expected. Let’s hope Big Ben cleans up his act before something really, really bad happens to his career. Let’s hope no more “innocent” people get hurt.

Darren Sproles of the Chargers could be in for a big fantasy boost, if he retains that starter job as the Chargers are indicating. Imagine, this year he is going to be remarkably better than last year when he was the quasi starter, sharing time with LT. As some of you know, I have season tickets with the Chargers and am still angry over the debacle with the Jets. All I KNOW FOR SURE is that Sproles is better as a returner and spot starter that as a 25 carries per game featured runner. Even with the Chargers great passing game, they need running plays to make that offense live up to its potential. Mock drafts will likely move Sproles up higher than he should be, but we will see where the player rankings put him.

Finally, what don’t we know? So much, that we could fill the Grand Canyon with questions. So instead of the all-time government job….namely filling in the Grand Canyon, we will end this column with the following thought. It is only 8 weeks to the first fantasy football drafts. Look for Fantasy Sports Optimizer revised web page coming soon.

See you in a couple of weeks!!!!
