Giants Win!!! Giants Win!!!

February 7th, 2012

No doubt about it, just as Sweetness predicted the Giants were victorious over the Brady Bunch. It wasn’t quite the route I thought it would be, but never-the-less it was another Super Bowl win.

The Giants were near extinction as every football fan knows, but won all the rest of their games and beat the former world champs, the Falcons and the Patriots. They truly won the game and played a very good team that took them to the last play. However, in the end it was the boys from across the Hudson River that had what it took. Bravo!!!!

The defense played well against a great quarterback and kept the game close until the offense put together a great drive to give them the lead. Then the defense prevented the Pats from scoring the winning TD, but knocking down the last pass into the end zone. What a great finish for the boys in white as they worked tirelessly against the super offense of the New Englanders. A well deserved pat on the back to the big D of New York.

The offense also did what it had to and the winning drive had the Manningham highlight of his career catch, the TD that some said should not have happened, and a great bit of generalship by Eli. Regarding the TD, let’s not get too cerebral and take a knee when 7 points are offered to you. Many things can happen on a field goal try and the sure TD was the right call. After all you have the best defense, why not take the gift?

Both coaches were on their game too. No doubt, Mr. C of the Giants is as good as Mr. B of the Patriots in big games. Tom never quits and either does his team. Great job by the coach of the champs.

Next year, of course, there is no hope for either of these teams as the mighty Bears will go 19-0 to cement the title as the greatest team ever!!! Go Bears!!!!

OK, So They Came Close

February 7th, 2012

The New England Patriots played a good game on Sunday, but could not get over the hump. In viewing the game, I never knew who was going to win until it was over. That means it was a close game all the way. It was exciting, positively great, absolutely miserable etc., etc., etc.

My predicted victors just didn’t have enough fire power to overcome a well coached Giant team. The defense of New England was raked on all year, but they did hold the Giants to only 24 points. Not a bad showing, but it could have been better. 12 men on the field, and a misaligned defensive back on the Manning play to name two. But no one can be perfect and they overall did a good job.

Tom Brady was very good, setting the record for completions in a row. But even Tom made a few mistakes, like the safety pass, and the too high pass to Welker. Most blame Wes for dropping the ball, but the pass wasn’t perfect either. With the big Gronk slowed it hurt there down field ability to score. I think the interception of the under toss to Gronk would not have happened if he were totally healthy. But it is a game of playing with injuries and if you make a play you do and if you don’t you don’t. No excuses, just results count.

I know that the Pats need more speed on the outside, but if you have all the weapons then there is no drama. They are still a very good team and a great organization. Their window of opportunity remains open, though it only has a few more years before it shuts. Good luck next year and I hope that they are almost as good as my San Diego Chargers!!!

I am going on vacation for a while, so have a great Valentine’s Day.

Brady’s Brunch Will Slay The Giants!!!

February 3rd, 2012

No need to watch the game on Sunday, since Braincase has spoken. Remember, I picked the Steelers over the Broncos so there is no need to worry in Boston this weekend. The reasons for the upcoming Pats victory are numerous and will be detailed in later paragraphs, but let’s start with the letter B as in Brady or Belichick.

Tom Brady is really a very good QB, who has many offensive weapons available to him. They include the two Tight Ends (Gronk and Hernandez), super slot Welker, Branch on the outside and their secret weapon the Great Chad!!!! OK, so Chad O has been a disappointment, but the other four guys make up for it. What Belichick has to figure out is how to keep Tom from being eaten by the pass rush of the Giants fearsome foursome. I’m not sure who their best blocker is that is not normally playing, but using him at running back might be a good idea.

The defensive squad will face a team that has really good wide outs and the hottest QB in the playoffs. So they must slow them down at the line or hope that Nicks etc., drops the ball. Nicks has hands the size a true Giant, so hoping for drops won’t work. The solution, slow them at the line of scrimmage and get to their QB. If they can do that then they can slow the points that Eli will put up on the board. Once again Bill Belichick will have to come up with a good plan. I know that he can do it.

The Patriots are never out of a game and have a possible blow out win in their future, hopefully, this upcoming Sunday. Super Bowl XLVI is an opportunity for fame that will last more than one generation. That is hard to do. Think about the great Steeler teams of the 70’s and name the key players. Maybe, you can get three or four, but not 10. 25 years ago, many people knew 15. The point is, that fame fades, so it is very important to win the big one enough, so that you are in a class by yourself or with the few of the very great. Brady and Belichick have this chance on Sunday and I think that they will achieve it by the score of New England 37-Giants 24.

Have a great Super Bowl and may your favorites do well!!!!

The Giants Will Triumph

February 3rd, 2012

With only two days left before the big game, it is apparent that the Giants are primed for a win. They have the defense to put pressure on Tom Brady and the offense to score a bunch of Touchdowns. I see them scoring four TDs and netting three field goal for 37 big fat victory points.

If we look at their defense, the front four is the key to their success. They have all year (2012 at least) dominated the line of scrimmage. They have many individual stars on defense, and that is what makes them so tough. If you double team one of their guys, the other three will give you a headache.

The least known of the line is probably Chris Canty. But he is a helluva player and compliments the other three. Osi U., Jason P-P, and Justin Tuck all are more than capable. The Pats run a lot of quick pass routes, so the rush must be very effective to cause some miss throws. So far in the playoffs they have done it. They were able to put enough pressure on the Packers in Green Bay to throw them out of synch. This Sunday will be the same. No way the Patriots win if they can’t pass at will.

On offensive you have super hot Eli and his merry band of men also known as receivers. Nicks, Manningham and Cruz are ready to take apart the fairly weak New England pass defense. The Pats will be hard pressed to keep up and the occasional run will seal the deal.

Coaching is good on both sides, so there is no advantage that I see for either team. In summary, too much pass rush and a hot passing game will seal the defeat for the favorite Patriots. Final score 37 -27 in favor of the Giants.

That’s Why They Call It Football!!

January 25th, 2012

The match-up between the Giants and 49er’s was as exciting as advertised. Eli, the hottest QB in the NFL now, went against the great defense of the 49er’s. Everything went according to plan for most of the game and then the wheels came off for the 49er’s due to dual miscues by one of their return men. He shall remain nameless, due to receiving death threats he received from various nuts out there.

The kicking game is oh so important and that includes kickoffs, punting, field goals, extra points and returns. It showed again its importance on Sunday. Both teams played with their strength showing throughout the game. The 49er’s run defense was really great against the run and stopped the Giants cold on several occasions. They held Eli as much in check as anyone can at this point in the season, since he is so hot.

The Giants defense played another great game and kept the 49er’s bottled up most of the day. I don’t know why they are so much better now, but man they are now the equal any defensive in the league. The pass rush continued to put pressure on Alex Smith all day with only a four man rush and minimal blitzing. That is hard to do, but they are healthy, hungry and hot. The three Hs of a winning defense.

The Giants were not able to mount the offensive that they expected, but when they got two opportunities handed to them they scored and won the game. The 49er’s had only one turnover on special teams all season until the dreaded mistakes took place. The first one on the ball touching the leg of the returner was really a big mental error on the part of most of the players on the field until the Lone Ranger (D. Thomas) came and got the ball for the Giants. The second one was the fumbled return, also recovered by Thomas.

The game ball should have been given to the 49er’e and then recovered for the Giants by Thomas. Special player of the play-offs is Devon Thomas of the New York Giants. Good job Devon!!!

Next week, we will review the Giants in the week before the big game. Have a great week.

The Ravens Almost Won!!!

January 25th, 2012

The Ravens almost followed my plan and almost beat the mighty Patriots. Next year, if they follow the plan exactly, they will be in the Superbowl.

In listening on Monday morning, you have to wonder if the talking heads watched the same game that I did. Let’s face it, if Evans doesn’t drop the ball and Cundiff doesn’t miff, there is an excellent chance that the Ravens are in the Super bowl.

I really think that Tom Brady is the one of the best quarterbacks there is, but on Sunday Flacco was his equal or better. Now granted that the Patriots defense is not as good as the Ravens, but still a decent defense, but Flacco did very well. He had a great pass on more than one occasion that receivers dropped. Not only did Evans drop the winning touchdown pass, but one of their TEs dropped a drive killing pass earlier in the game. Too bad about Cundiff, but the play for whatever reason was rushed and the Ravens should have used their last timeout to settle things down. A drop and a miff and Tom Brady goes to another Superbowl.

It always amazes me that the big plays are ignored or minimized when talking about the result of the game. These teams are so close, that miscues are always the difference. The last 15 seconds of the game was miscue heaven for the Ravens. 59:45 of great play and 15 seconds of disaster. On Monday, two of the most noted talking heads fame mentioned that Brady once again showed his superiority and the Patriots were going to Indianapolis because of him. I would argue that they owe a lot to their defensive back who hit Evans hands when the game looked over as much as anybody.

So now the Patriots are the early favorite in another Superbowl. Next week, we will talk about the Patriots and let that Chicagoan blog about the Giants. Until then have fun!

The Brady Bunch Vs. The Mean Bunch

January 17th, 2012

Well, last week was the end of the Tebow dream. The Broncos are just not in the class of the Patriots. The mighty big D of the Ravens was enough to overcome the valiant group from Houston. Congrats to both winners!!!

This weekend, I see a very interesting game for the AFC championship. The outstanding defense of the Ravens against the great offense of the Patriots. Additionally, the relatively weak offensive of the Ravens plays against the relatively weak defense of the Patriots. Does this mean a 16-13 game or a 41-31 game?

The view from the top, not my vantage point though, makes it look like the Patriots are going to score six times. Now, are these TDs or FGs? That answer will determine the winner of the game. Why? Because the Ravens are only going to score five times. So their max is 35, while the Pats’ max is 42.

The game assumes that Ed Reed will be playing for the Ravens. If Ed is hurt, then it is the team from New England in a romp. Mr. Reed is really, really good. He maybe the most important player on the field next to Mr. Brady. Both guys are at the top of their respective positions and that makes for lots of interesting match-ups.

The knock against the Ravens is that their offensive just doesn’t get it done, though they seem to have the weapons necessary. The question always revolves around Joe Flacco, but the real question in my mind is the play calling. I would use a combination of massive amount of runs by Rice, with R. Williams taking a turn every so often, and deep passes to T. Smith to keep the Pats’ defense honest. This way you could control the clock a little more and maybe hit a big one every so often. Use Bolden over the middle when necessary, but mostly as a decoy. If Brady is not on the field the Pats defense is not going to score.

Now when Tom Terrific is on the field, I would put a lot of pressure on him. Use at least 5 men in every rush, no prevent defenses and let the Reed pick one or two off for fun. R. Lewis will do his part, so the combination of a strong overall pass rush and let’em run if they want attitude, could change the game around.

Of course, Tom Brady is one of the all-time best and will hit a large number of passes to numerous receivers, including his twin towers at TE. The Patriots will probably try to make Flacco pass and stuff Rice or Williams, but that could be tough, if Baltimore sticks to my plan. So all the Ravens have to do to win, is use my plan on both sides of the ball. Unfortunately, they won’t, so I see 34-23 Patriots victory.

Have a fun filled Sunday enjoying the games.

San Francisco, Here We Come!!!

January 17th, 2012

I bet you could write a song using those words as a starter or if you are a bigger thinker, use a state’s name instead. Well, the unthinkable has happened, neither Rodgers nor Brees is still playing. Kudos to the 49er’s and Giants, both deserving teams that won their way into the finals.

This week, we will have the best defense against the hottest offense. Another classic match. This year’s playoffs have been very exciting and I see no reason to think that the game on Sunday will be any different.

The home team 49er’s shocked me almost as much as they shocked the Saints. I never thought that they would comeback twice in the last few minutes. Smith, Davis and the whole offense did a great job and actually saved the defense from a bad memory. Imagine forcing five turnovers and still losing. Well, with less that two minutes to go and most of the field ahead of you, Smith to Davis proved unstoppable. Many New Orleans’ fans were upset by the lack of double coverage in Davis, but the 49er’s saw an opportunity and made them pay. A Saints mistake, maybe, but a great job of execution by the Niners, absolutely! A salute to the champs of the west.

The visitors from New Jersey, commonly known as the New York Giants, were just as impressive. They took the Packers best punch and kept on fighting back with one outstanding play after another. The end of the first half will always be remembered as a masterful example of why when you don’t know what to do, throw the ball into the end zone. Eli and Nicks were both superb and really took the steam out of the soon-to-be ex-world champs.

Dropitis certainly hurt the Pack, but so did poor defense and a crazy timeout call. But make no mistake, the visitors deserved to win. The Giants were superior in every way and had a hostile crowd to fight, an emotionally charge team to fight and the best quarterback in the league to fight. And fight they did. The Giants were truly giants last Sunday.

This week’s game promises to be one of punch and counter punch. I really don’t know who is going to win, but I will stick with the home team, by a field goal. Say, 49er’s 27-Giants 24.

Go Bears!!!!!

NFC, Lots Of Drama

January 14th, 2012

The NFC this weekend features two very different, but exciting games. We will start with the number one offense against the league’s number one defense. This Saturday in San Francisco will have many of the leagues stars on parade.

The 49er’s are home and have many defensive weapons that can slow down the Saints. They can tackle, cause fumbles, make interceptions and play havoc with your offensive. No other team has been consistently as tough on defensive.

The Saints are are just the best overall offensive in the NFL. They can do it all and do it quickly. The running by committee works very well and, of course, they have Brees and those dangerous receivers. Truly a great offense.

The special teams are also very special. The place kickers are superb, the punters are exceptional and both teams can make great plays.

The game is a toss-up since it is San Francisco, but we will take the Saints in a squeaker say 24-23.

On Sunday, we have another great match-up between two very hot teams. The 15-1 Packers host the hottest team in the last few week the Giants. The Giants have really turned it on lately with a new found defense, a functioning running game and the hottest quarterback in the league, Mr. Eli Manning. The Packers have all their usual weapons back for the game and have a defensive that can get you takeaways.

The game has a heavy cloud hanging over it, with the death of a son of the Packers offensive coordinator. I have no idea what it means to the game, except to remind us all that this is an important game, but only a game.

The Packers have home field advantage and that could be huge this week. The crowd will be going nuts and the extra energy that this will bring to the Packers, makes me think that it will be a Packer victory. With Rodgers pushing the Giants to the limits and the tendency of the Packers to make big turnovers it will be too much to overcome for the Giants. Let’s say, a Packer victory by the margin of 38-34.

Go Bears!!!

AFC Is Exciting

January 12th, 2012

Last weekend, the AFC presented two very exciting games. The Texans despite numerous injuries were able to easily handle the Bengals. In the other match, some guy named Tebow and a bunch of other no name players participated in one of the most exciting games in playoff history. The first playoff using the new rules and it took less than a minute to decide that the Broncos are very exciting indeed. Timmy and Company sure looked like a real deserving team, not one to be mocked as the worst team in the playoffs. Last year it was Seattle stinks and they killed the Saints; this year it was the best seven teams in the playoffs and the Denver Broncos. Well, there are four less teams in the playoffs now and Denver is still alive and kicking, or maybe the correct phrase is Tebowing.

This week the AFC features the rugged Ravens and the “what have we got to lose” Texans in a game that probably would be rated as the least of the weekend, but might be the closest. Both teams have real good defenses, great runners, very fine receivers and OK quarterbacks. The Ravens have home field advantage, more experience and a healthier team. For those reasons they are a good size favorite.

The Texans, however, will come to play with many similar weapons. The smart money says the Ravens by six or so, but I think it will be closer, say a field goal. Still though, I predict a Baltimore victory by a 23-20 margin. This should be a good game to watch.

The Saturday night special could be a real banger or a big poof!!!! It all depends on what the Broncos do to make Tom Terrific get off of his game. I know that what the Denver offense does is very important, but in a track meet the lose. In a tight game they have a chance. The Broncos must play like they did for the last three quarters against the Steelers. Can they do it? Well, they are not in Denver and so the answer is probably a big NO!!!!

So many people get up tight about Tebow and mock him. He, of course, is still in the playoffs and they aren’t even in the game. They talk, but very few play or have played. I hope just for that reason the Tim Tebow has a great Saturday night, but hope for my playoff fantasy teams that he comes up just short. Say Patriots, 41, Denver 30.

Have a great weekend watching many great games and may your team win!!!!
